Scientists tell the Indian Government that tiger claims are 'ridiculous'

In the year 1900, there may have been as many or more than 100,000 tigers roaming this planet's forests. And every year since then until now, that number has decreased. But a combination of better and broader monitoring techniques and, governments say, increased vigilance against poachers has led to the first increase in tiger numbers in over a century — to 3,890 this year. Some of the biggest increases were in India, which, in its latest tiger census, claimed a 30 percent population ...

More evidence suggesting that 'Ustad' has been unfairly treated.

More evidence suggesting that 'Ustad' has been unfairly treated.

Experts from the Bareilly-based Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) have found "nothing unusual" in the behavior of nine-year-old tiger T-24, also known as 'Ustad', that was translocated from Ranthambhore in Rajasthan to Udaipur after a forester was attacked and killed by a male tiger in the National Park. Though it was not clear whether it was T-72 or T-24 that attacked, Ustad was shifted as there were three incidents against him. Since then T-24 has been under obser ...

In 2009, the nation committed to double the number of wild tigers to 1,000 by 2020 under the National Tiger Action Plan, which spells out the measures needed to boost tiger numbers. With barely four years left to the deadline, we may have to concede defeat. Our tiger population has not grown, but dwindled.  When the plan was drawn up, it was thought that some 500 tigers still roam our forests. Many in the conservation circle found that to be a generous estimate and finally, in 2014, it wa ...

The disgusting truth behind the Tiger Farms in China

Thousands of tigers are dying in wretched conditions on farms masquerading as wildlife parks to feed a booming multi-million dollar business in China for wine made with their bones, a MailOnline investigation reveals.  Sold as a health tonic and aphrodisiac in bottles shaped as tigers, the wine is surging in popularity with online sales and a tacit government acceptance of the trade making it easier than ever to order for the dinner tables of the country's growing rich elite.  Re ...

Nepal and India to work together in an effort to save tigers from poachers

Wildlife conservation authorities from Nepal and India have concluded that Bawaria and Banjara tribal communities in India pose key threat to tiger conservation, and decided to come up with measures to track down the poachers, monitor their activities and restrict their movement along the trans-boundary corridor.   A dramatic surge in tiger poaching with cases of arrests and seizures of tiger skins and body parts in Nepal has triggered alarm bells in both the countries.  Tiger c ...
